The Making Of 'Alarms'

What have you learnt from audience feedback?

I arranged a group screening of our music video to a year 12 class. They watched the video twice and were given some starting points to consider while watching it. We then took them outside individually and interviewed them on camera to find out what they thought of the video, their understanding of it and whether or not they feel it met their expectations of the indie genre.

From this audience feedback we can learn that our target audience understood the band to be either Indie, Pop or Rock as a result of our use of location, mise en scene, the costume, perfomance from the band and themes explored within the narrative. This meant that we had successfully created a music video that audiences immediately understood to be Indie/Alternative.
Those interviewed expressed that they felt the performance was beneficial to the video and worked well with the music, but also that they were not completely satisfied with the energy levels shown within the performance. This is due to a lack of time on our behalf when going to film the performance, in future I will ensure that there is sufficient time allocated to each aspect of planning so that all feature of a product meet the audience's needs.
Audience members were asked as to whether or not they understood the storyline and the use of flashbacks within the narrative. All were able to describe to us a good understanding of the video, informing us that the flashbacks and use of the motif of the necklace contributed greatly to their understanding of the text. It was also noted that the flashbacks could perhaps have been made more defined and pronounced by the colour being further manipulated, for example the footage being made black and white to make the transitions in time more prominant.
When given the oppertunity to describe any changes they would make to the text, the majority of students said they wouldn't change anything about the video. The few that did highlight changes they would make suggested perhaps more use of camera angles and provoke a more energised performance from the band.
Over all based on our audience feedback I have discovered that our use of location, costume, mise en scene and narrative were successful in creating an Indie music video that was clear, appealing to our target audience and easy for them to understand. I have also learnt that in future it would be of benefit to me to organise time more efficiently in order for all aspects of my product to be of a good quality and satisfying to audiences.
